img_5046.jpg For a few years now I have kept telling myself when school is done that I’m going to clean up our hell hole of a basement. I think this summer is going to be the summer! When I am finally in nothing but editing mode with my advisor over the dissertation I’m going to start to tackle the basement. It’s become a storage pit for anything and everything, including crap left here by friends or acquaintances. They’ll be getting called to come get their crap or it’s going to get left outside. Actually since it’s been left here for free, maybe I can sell some of it 🙂 Honestly, I don’t think they even remember it’s here anymore.

Because our basement is prone to flooding in parts when we get heavy rains, all cardboard boxes are going. They need to go anyways as they are roach and bug magnets. I’ll probably have to drop a good amount of cash at TarJay for rubber made containers, so I’ll just watch for when they are on sale. There is a lot in boxes right now, but there is just a lot of empty boxes down there too. From PC boxes to DVD boxes, you name it, it’s down there.

Worse than organizing is going to be the cleaning aspect. Some places have insane cobwebs built up, others I think are actually giant spider webs. The dust is going to be terrible, I’ll have to get myself one of those masks from the store. Plus I need to get about 10 mops and several gallons of floor cleaner and disinfectant cause lord knows what is growing on the floor or walls in places!

Once this is done, and I’m sure it will be a whole summer’s job, I want to start cleaning up the yard and the back barn, which we use as a garage. It’s a hell hole too!

  1. I cleaned my basement 2 years ago because my son and daughter in law had to move in. It was a huge job. I worked non stop for a week. I filled the curb for the trash men, 2 weeks in a row. I set aside some stuff for a garage sale that I later had. Tilex is very good to spray on any mole you might find. We have two corners that leak and mole grows on those walls. I spray monthly to keep it clean. Everything from our son’s house had to go in our basement. It was packed but we did it, plus set up a small living room and bedroom for them. They stayed a year. Now my basement is so empty. My garage is this summers big project for me, it’s a mess. Hey is that a doll house I see in your basement? I always wanted one when I was a kid and never got one 🙁 If I had the money I think I would still get myself a really fancy one. In our neighborhood there is a house with a huge window and a beautiful doll house set up in the window. Good luck cleaning.

  2. That is some basement you have:) Good luck with the cleaning. I make Travis clean out ours. I don’t like anything that smells moldy and the idea of a spider dropping down to say “hi” scares the crap out of me!!

  3. Yeah the dollhouse is something left by someone who needs to come pick it up 🙂

  4. I have a “junk room” that looks very much like your basement. Be very careful about spiders, especially in the dark corners and in and around cardboard boxes. We have wolf spiders here that jump out and scare the crap out of you…but I don’t think they are poisonous…just creepy.
