I’ve made no secrets that I love a good scary movie. I’ve also made no secrets that most of what is put out today I think is garbage. So when I find something good, I try and share. Oddly this movie “Beneath” comes from MTV studios. I’d never heard of it, I think it must have been a straight to DVD flick. Nevertheless, it was pretty good.

The story surrounds a young woman named Christy. She and her sister Vanessa were orphans, Vanessa basically was the older sister who raised Christy. Vanessa married and had her own child while Christy was still a teen. Vanessa and Christy were in a terrible car accident. Vanessa was caught in an explosion while Christy was thrown from the car. Vanessa was burned all over her body. She lingered for six months before dying. Meanwhile after the car accident Christy seemed to suffer a breakdown. She “sympathized” with her sister’s torment and pain and began having “visions.” It seemed she was imaging she was her sister at times. Upon her sister’s death, she lost it at her funeral. She was convinced her sister was not dead and even tried to open the coffin. Christy was promptly sent off to an institution. After she recovered, she went off to college and began med school.

Years later Christy returns home. A caretaker who worked on the sister’s family estate died, she was close to him. She returned home to see her former brother-in-law, his overbearing mother, and her own niece who was now around 11 or 12. Upon returning to the house her sister raised her in, and where she died, Christy’s odd visions return. She remains convinced her sister was buried alive and is now calling out from the grave for revenge. Christy, who has sketched over the years as therapy, soon finds she’s sketched things and people she’s never seen, all tied to the estate.

If you want scares, this movie isn’t for you. If you want gore, this movie isn’t for you. What this movie does offer is a very creepy and disturbing story, through both the setting of the house, Christy’s visions and her niece’s insistence that a “dark thing” lives in the walls of the house. The story I felt was excellent. You’ll probably figure it out about half way through, or think you have. This film has a great twist at the end that even I didn’t see coming. It’s well acted and well shot. Two thumbs up.
