So on a fluke, well not a complete fluke, I rented this movie “The Last Mimzy.” Blockbuster.com kept saying my que was getting low, and this movie was among the new releases one week. I added it because I remembered it. I remembered it because there was a huge poster on a building in Philly with the tagline “Do you have the answer?” It caught my eye and I thought I might want to see that movie. However along with probably everyone else, it flew under my radar. Flash forward to a few weeks ago when it came up on Blockbuster.com. I remembered the poster enough to add it to my que, and I’m so glad I did! Oddly enough, it arrived weeks ago and sat in my house. Probably like it did in the theaters, it sat forgotten until tonight when I finally watched it. What took me so long!

This is one of those movies that is so hard to describe without spoiling. It’s PG and appears to be a family friendly film. Oh how wrong! Kids aren’t going to understand this film. They might enjoy it, but the adults are the ones who will get it. Basically, without giving too much away, the premise is two siblings find a box of toys that were sent from the future. The toys were sent for a purpose, and these kids who find them are “the chosen ones” per say. To say anymore is to give far too much of the story away.

Those who are familiar with the movies “Explorers” or “Flight of the Navigator” will probably love this movie. If your aren’t, still give it a try. It really is one of those rare gems that goes unnoticed. Superbly acted and with a great cast that includes Michael Clarke Duncan, Raine Wilson and Jolie Richardson. Aside from the poster I saw on a building in Philly, I heard NOTHING about this movie and saw no commercials for it on TV. Rent it, you won’t be sorry you did.

  1. It was more heavily advertised here, but I wasn’t sure I wanted to see it. After reading this, I’ll add it to my Netflix queue. :0)
