Walking Nikko this afternoon I noticed he kept stopping to lick his paw. Finally I took him in, he was limping and quickly ran to hide from me as I was demanding to see what went wrong. I was afraid he stepped on a bee, as there is a place out back where there are lots of them (there is a hive, but a man made one to fertilize farm fields). I searched his paw, it wasn’t swelling. Whatever was going on kept getting worse, he whined when I tried to touch his paw. It appeared he cracked his dewclaw, though I didn’t know if that was a result of him biting at his paw or the problem.

Of to the vet we went, emergency visit and charge of course as it was after hours. Yes he did crack his claw, and it was good I brought him in. If the crack continued traveling up into his paw it risked a nasty infection. To keep that from happening they clipped it really short (ouch!) and gave him this wonderful purple bandage (which I’m sure he will NOT like when the pain medicine he’s doped up on begins wearing off).

So the doggies will be sleeping in the bed the next few nights so I can keep an eye on Nikko and make sure he doesn’t start tearing at the bandage when I’m not around. When left alone Nikko is a destructive doggie, but only when nobody is watching! Normally the dogs sleep downstairs on their own/together. I haven’t really put them in the bed together because Nikko can jump off the bed and get into trouble, Princess can’t.

  1. Poor Nikko. We had a dog that got a stinger in the paw.The Dr. gave him antihyst. shot. Why does he have a dew claw still?

  2. Poor baby Nikko. I swear that dogs are bigger babies than a baby…or at least mine is:) I hope his pain shot lasts for awhile longer so you can get some rest before Nikko decides to have fun chewing his bandage.

  3. Sorry to hear about Nikko! Make sure that you keep a really good eye on him until the bandage is able to be removed. If he won’t stop chewing at it, muzzle him if necessary. It might sound mean, but it’s better than the consequence. My mom’s dog had a bandaged injury on its leg. My mom woke up the next morning to find that the dog had chewed threw the bandage and chewed on the injury. The dog bled to death during the night. Keep us posted on his progress, and give him a hug from all of your readers.
